Luiz Kahl Memorial Trophy

The Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC) is proud to introduce the Luiz Kahl Memorial Trophy, a new perpetual award presented each season to the team that raises the most funding for Warrior Sailing.

This trophy honors the remarkable legacy of Luiz Kahl, the visionary founder of Yacht Scoring, a tireless volunteer, and a sailor who believed deeply in community, access, and excellence. Luiz revolutionized regatta management by creating the system that now supports events around the world, and he consistently showed up on the docks, behind the computers, and alongside race committees to make sailing better for everyone.

His life’s work opened doors and brought more people into the sport, which is why Warrior Sailing is such a meaningful beneficiary of this award. Warrior Sailing provides maritime education, racing opportunities, and healing experiences for wounded, ill, and injured veterans. This year they celebrated their 50th Basic Training Camp, giving more than 875 warriors the skills, confidence, and community to find their place in our sport.

SORC’s mission is to expand offshore sailing by offering world-class racing and creating opportunities for all who love the ocean. Supporting Warrior Sailing and honoring Luiz Kahl aligns perfectly with that mission.

We are grateful to dedicate this trophy in Luiz’s name, and we look forward to recognizing the team whose generosity makes the greatest impact each season.

The Islands in the Stream Series first brought the races of the modern SORC together in 2015. By then, the SORC had organized the Nassau Cup Ocean Race and the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race for many years. With the decision to organize the first Miami to Havana Race for a February 2016 start, putting the races into a series was a natural choice. The Wirth M. Munroe Palm Beach Race, the venerable “Race to the Buffet” was a perfect addition to the series. Despite not being an official SORC event, it fit the SORC mission of promoting the sport of offshore sailboat racing in South Florida.

With that, the SORC Islands in the Stream Series was born. The series allows sailors escaping winter conditions up north to compete against Florida talent in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, and spend their winter in tropical destinations instead of shoveling snow.  The series has visited different destinations over the ensuing years, and will continue to evolve, to keep competitors seeing a mix of old favorites and new destinations. What does not change is that the boat with the most consistent finishes wins the series year after year, after several races through warm waters to reach places that show up on postcards.
